Plant of the week: Hamamelis

Commonly known as Witch Hazel, these large shrubs are a favourite because they offer great Winter colour from their scented spidery-shaped flowers.

Most varieties come with yellow, orange or red blooms which helps them stand out in the dull Winter weather. The oval shaped leaves are a lush dark green colour in Summer before turning yellow and falling in Autumn.

Very little pruning is required as Witch Hazels are slow growing. In most cases they only grow to a maximum height of 2.5 meters, however some varieties can reach 4 meters. For best results plant in acid-neutral soil which is protected from the harshest of Winter winds. To encourage flowering, ensure that it is placed in a sunny spot.
